Salmonella is a silent infector...

Be aware. Be preventative.

Iowa lab warned egg company of hens infected with salmonella months before outbreak, recall


         Salmonella is one of the most common bacterial form of food borne illnesses. Salmonella is a terrible bacterial that can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within days of eating a contaminated product also, it can be life-threatening and there have been many cases of this illness throughout Canada and the US. An outbreak of salmonella occurred April 2010 in Iowa when hens were discovered infected with salmonella leaving their eggs contaminated.The laboratory where they were testing the eggs reported the results to the producer who had requested the tests, but scientists stated they had no legal or ethical obligation to alert consumers. The tests were made while a federal grand jury looked into whether egg company executives misled the public by continuing to market products as being safe despite there potential knowledge being that they were contaminated. By late April scientists tested the hens that originated from DeCoster's poultry and discovered that 43% of DeCoster's poultry houses in Iowa were testing positive for salmonella. Around the same time DeCoster's managers started noticing a high death rate of chickens and these car-causes were sent for testing. This led the buyers of the tainted eggs to file law suits against DeCoster's company because of the proof they obtained. Overall, this outbreak resulted by sickening about 62,000 Americans thankfully no deaths were reported.

How do you know if you have salmonella poisoning?

It is always good to consult a doctor if you feel you have a food borne illness but some symptom identifiers are:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting 
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Headache
  • Muscle pain
  • Blood in stool
These signs and symptoms of a salmonella infection will last for about seven days and it can even take 7 months for your bowels to go back to normal. Some causes of salmonella can result in typhoid fever and can even be deadly! Therefore, being aware and preventative is a smart start to illuminating your chances for this food borne illness

Asian Turkey Burgers

A healthy and tasty alternative rather than a heavy beef burger!


Total time: 1 hr 33 min
Prep: 25 min

You will need..

1/4 cup bulgur wheat
  • - 1/2 cup boiling water
  • - 1/4 cup rice wine vinegar
  • - 1 teaspoon sugar
  • - Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • - 1/4 seedless cucumber, sliced 1/8-inch thick
  • - 1/4 small red onion, thinly sliced
  • - 1/4 cup plain low-fat yogurt
  • - 1 teaspoon chili garlic sauce
  • - 12 ounces lean ground turkey
  • - 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • - 2 scallions, chopped
  • - 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • - 1 clove garlic, grated
  • - 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro, plus 1/4 cup whole leaves
  • - 2 teaspoons vegetable oil
  • - 4 whole wheat hamburger rolls

Instructions.. 

1.) Put the bulgur in a medium bowl and add the boiling water. Cover with plastic wrap and let stand until the bulgur is tender, 45 minutes to 1 hour.
2.) Meanwhile, in a medium bowl whisk the vinegar and sugar with a generous seasoning of salt and pepper until dissolved. Add the cucumber and onion, toss well and set aside to marinate for about 30 minutes.
3.) In a separate small bowl combine the yogurt and chili garlic sauce. Season with salt and pepper and set aside.
4.) Drain the bulgur and put into a large bowl. Add the turkey, hoisin, scallions, ginger, garlic and chopped cilantro and mix until just combined. Form into 4 equal sized patties.
5.) Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat until very hot. Lightly brush both sides of each patty with oil and place in the skillet. Cook, turning once, until just cooked through, 3 to 4 minutes per side.
6.) Drain the pickled vegetables and toss with the whole cilantro. Spread some spicy yogurt sauce on the top and bottom of each bun and top with a burger patty and some pickles.

Great for kids as it disguises the regular hamburger a popular food choice for kids into a healthier alternative. Also, this is a great choice for teens, adults and the elderly! This is because it is a healthier choice that is equally as delicious as a normal hamburger with great Asian flavours and it has reduced cholesterol than a regular beef burger.

Lactose free can be easy!

Milk has sparked a lot of controversy and it has been suggested that it isn't the best source of calcium to put into our bodies but, milk can easily be illuminated and replaced with a variety of different alternatives. This helps to live a lactose free life for those with lactose intolerance and for others who want to stop consuming so much milk because of these controversial issues towards milk being negative to our health.

There are many great alternatives.... 


Lactose-free milk- Contains the same proteins as milk but doesn't include and lactose. It is also available is regular milk varieties ( Skim, 1%, 2% etc.)  Lactose-free milk is also available in organic varieties.
Soy Milk- This is one of the most popular alternatives to milk and it a great source of protein it is also great for cooking and baking! 
Nut Milks-Nut milk being almond milk is among the most common of nut milks. This alternative is great for baking also, these nuts are high in "good fats" and Vitamin E. 
Rice Milk- Rice milk comes in its vanilla flavour and is very sweet. It isn't useful for cooking but is best used as a beverage and for pouring on cereal.
Hemp Milk- This is a newer milk alternative and may be difficult to find in some places. It has a high amount of protein and can be used for some cooking applications ( i.e. sauces) 

Oat Milk- This milk alternative has a moderate amount of protein therefore making oat milk more useful  for cooking. This milk replacement is  mild and nutty tasting also, it is a great match for hot cereals and many breakfast foods!

Overall, there are many replacements to milk alone and there are also many different alternatives in order to implement calcium into your diet without consuming the lactose in diary products. You can still have your cupcake and eat it too.. keeping it dairy free!

-->The graph below clearly displays the most reoccurring answer for how people surveyed feel they should thaw their meat.  The most reoccurring answer was thawing your meat on the counter which is the most dangerous way to thaw your meat as it risks food borne illness therefore, this shows how people surveyed are at risk off food borne illness.

The Truth About Vitamin Water



One interesting article I have discovered is called The Truth About Vitamin Water. This article stood out to me as it personally relates to a product that I consume occasionally being Vitamin Water. This article includes some interesting information focusing on the rising popularity towards new flavored waters more specially being the newest and most popular water Vitamin Water. This article portrays a negative tone towards Vitamin Water, being that it isn’t the best thing to drink and doesn’t actually include all the health benefits that it advertises.




          One of the main points in this article talks about the advertising of the water, giving Vitamin Water a “wanting” persona for certain age groups targeting teenagers. For instance, this special water gives it the illusion that it is hydrating, healthy and rejuvenating as the bottles include different flavour names like endurance, energy, essential and focus. Therefore, this product gives its customers the illusion that these waters will energize you, help you focus etc. Also, the way they package the product is another luring scheme to get their target market into buying their product. I personally purchase Vitamin Water and fall under the companies target market, once educating myself with this article I found that these negative adaptations towards this water is something to consider. For example, they are in nice easy to carry bottles that include many different colours that match what kind of Vitamin Water is in the bottle and the bottles include cool texts that describe what this water will contribute to you. Their marketing scheme has done very well, even though these waters are significantly more expensive then most regular waters people still seem to purchase them because of how they advertise and produce this product. Therefore, I can easily connect this to myself as I still purchase this water on occasion and I feel I do so because of the advertisments that this water can automatically benefit towards your health.Another important point that can be clearly viewed in this article are by looking at the nutrition facts of the water. The author mentions that when looking at Vitamin Water's website no nutritional facts were listed and that she had to look at other sources to find this information.  When reviewing the nutrition facts it was discovered that there were mostly negatives being that one bottle of Vitamin Water included 125 calories and 33 grams of sugar! The author compares this to Coke and mentions that Vitamin Water is more then a 12 ounce serving of Coke. Coke is generally a worse choice but nutritionally you still get the sugar and calories from both drinks. Therefore, calling Vitamin Water “water” isn’t too practical as it has other unhealthy additives in it and I feel this easily can be connected to their marketing schemes as they make the water perceive healthier then it actually is. 

          Even though this article depicts Vitamin Water in a negative tone there are a variety of sources that find Vitamin water to be a great choice for a healthy beneficial beverage. It has been arguable in a variety of other sources that this water is the energy kick you need for a good work out. This energy boost comes from the electrolytes, sugars in moderation, carbs and vitamins in the drink that all contribute towards your energy while working out. Another reason vitamin water can be viewed as a positive rather than negative is that it is a healthier alternative than other sports drinks. This is because it contains some vitamin and minerals and hydrates the body very well which benefits your body rather than other sports drinks that aren't as beneficial. Therefore, it is clear to see the opposing views on vitamin water with these points from other sources and in my opinion I find these to be valid points as I drink Vitamin water when I work out and feel more energized when drinking it.


In conclusion, I personally feel that The Truth About Vitamin Water article opened my eyes to the cons of Vitamin Water showing how media can bend the truth in order to sell a products. Also, how reading the nutrition fact carefully is very important even though the name of the product is very deceiving. The opposing view being that Vitamin Water is a positive benefit is also another opinion I find to be something to consider as there are helpful pros towards this drink when looking into some examples. Overall, I value both the pros and cons of Vitamin water but I feel that I should eliminate some of my consumption of this drink as it will benefit towards me personally. I can save money by drinking regular water more often and not have to worry about other ingredients in the drink that would negatively effect my body.
